デフラグビーとは/Deaf Rugby..what's that?

ラグビーは、意外なほど音の情報を重要とするスポーツです。自分より後背にパスを投げなければならないルールを実行するには、声を掛け合って行う（コーリング）ことが良いとされます。また、レフリーの笛によってコントロールされる試合の流れを読む段において、笛の長さや強さを聞いて判断するのも、一つの技術といえるものです。そんなラグビーに、デフ（←Deaf=聴こえない、または聴こえにくい）の人たちが取り組んでいます。

Rugby is a sport that relies on auditory cues more than you might imagine. One of the rules of rugby is that players must pass the ball to someone behind them, and communicating verbally is essential to executing this.
Additionally, rugby matches are controlled by the referee’s whistle, and it is important to listen to the length and volume of the whistle to gauge the flow of the game. Deaf players are actively participating in this sport. The term “Deaf” refers to people who are deaf or hard of hearing.

クワイエットタイフーンとは/Quet Typhoon

“クワイエットタイフーン”とは、日本のデフ（Deaf…聴こえない、聴こえにくい人たち）選手で構成されるラグビーチームの愛称です。
1995年に行われた、初めての全国合宿は、当時戦後最大の台風襲来という不運に見舞われ、開催が危ぶまれました。当時は携帯電話も普及しておらず、予定の変更はFAXでしか伝えられない環境。警報発令によりグラウンド使用が不許可になるなど刻々と変わる中で、参加者全員で力を合わせ、全メニューはこなせなかったものの、初めてデフラグビーとしての活動を行えました。
台風襲来での困難さと、その中で達成した喜びを忘れないようにつけた名前…それが“クワイエットタイフーン”なのです。
2019年の香港、2024年のフィジー遠征でも、大きな台風に襲来されましたが、両遠征とも奇跡的な天候回復で試合を敢行し、ギリギリのスケジュールでしたが無事帰国出来ました。
また、2002年8月のIDRO主催のデフラグビー世界選手権では、セブンズ部門で準優勝、2018年第一回ワールドデフセブンズでも存在感を示している我々は、世界のデフラグビーにおいて“台風の目”として頑張っていきたいと思います

“Quiet Typhoon” is the nickname of a rugby team made up of Japanese deflagration rugby players.
Their first national training camp was held in 1995. Unfortunately, the largest typhoon since the war struck, and it was uncertain whether the camp could even take place. At the time, cell phones were not yet widespread, and the only way to communicate schedule changes was via fax. Although warnings were issued and the field became unusable, all participants worked together to overcome the difficulties and successfully carried out their first activities as a Deaf rugby team.
The name “Quiet Typhoon” was chosen so that they would never forget the hardships caused by the typhoon and the joy of achieving their first-ever activities.
During their expeditions to Hong Kong in 2019 and Fiji in 2024, they were also hit by major typhoons, but in both cases, the weather miraculously cleared up, allowing the matches to be held.
In August 2002, Quiet Typhoon finished as runners-up in the Sevens division at the IDRO-hosted Deaf Rugby World Championships. They also put on an impressive performance at the first World Deaf Sevens in 2018. We intend to continue striving as the “eye of the storm” in the global Deaf rugby scene.

2026年５月10日、神奈川相模原ギオンスタジアムで、今秋行われる第三回デフラグビー世界セブンズに出場内定した５選手が、ダイナボアーズ対D’rocksのキックオフ前に、ピッチからスタンドに向かって挨拶した。
また、グラウンド周辺で行われていたイベント広場で“デフラグビー体験会”を開催し、スクラムを押すタイミングを手の合図で行うなどの、デフラグビーに必要な動きを解説して、視覚的なサポートが必要なことを啓発した。何より子供たちがデフ選手との触れ合いを楽しんでいたのがとても良い体験になっていた。

On May 10, 2026, at Kanagawa Sagamihara Gion Stadium, five players who have been provisionally selected to compete in the 3rd Deaf Rugby World Sevens this fall greeted the stands from the pitch before the kickoff of the Dynaboars vs. D’rocks match.
Additionally, a “Deaf Rugby Experience Session” was held in the event plaza near the stadium. The session explained the movements required for Deaf Rugby—such as using hand signals to indicate when to push in a scrum—and raised awareness of the need for visual support in Dear Rugby. Above all, it was a wonderful experience to see the children enjoying their interaction with the Deaf athletes.
